Panther Battalion History

JROTC has been an academic program at Murphy High School for 47 years. Since the program's establishment in 1969, over 10,000 Murphy students have been exposed to the ideals and training offered by the Army Junior Reserve Officers' Corps (JROTC).

JROTC Focus

Murphy's Army JROTC program focuses on promoting school and civic involvement. JROTC fosters citizenship, patriotism, self-reliance, leadership, teamwork, and respect for authority. Graduates of Murphy's JROTC program have capitalized on the skills they learned to enter Service Academies, College Senior ROTC Programs, Active Duty Military Service, and the civilian job force.

Last year alone, 5 cadets joined the military, and 3 received 4-year Senior ROTC scholarship for a total of $998,000 received in educational benefits.

All cadets completing  at least three years in the program may be recommended for advancement placement upon enlisting in the Army, Navy, or Air Force.

A Program Packed With Activities

While most of your JROTC training occurs in the class, you have ample opportunities to demonstrate what you have learned outside of the classroom.

You can be a member of the Color Guard and compete in drill meets or post the Colors at school football games, assemblies, and civic functions.

You can demonstrate commitment to your community, state, and nation by participating in the Veterans' Day Parade, Sacred Heart Elderly Home Mardi Gras Coronation, or numerous other civic functions.

Join either a Color Guard, Drill, Marksmanship, Scholars' Bowl, Orienteering, Rifle, or Physical Fitness Team and test your skills against the 13 other Mobile County programs.

Opportunity Without Obligation

There is no military obligation for anyone participating in JROTC. However, qualified students desiring to pursue a military career can earn 2, 3, or 4 year Senior ROTC scholarships.

Recognizing the value of Junior ROTC leadership courses, Mobile County grants students one (1) academic credit for each successful JROTC term completed. Students also earn credit for Health and PE for the successful completion of the first two years.

The Best Of The Best

Murphy High School's Panther Battalion has been home to national and county champions in all areas of competition. The Panther Drill Team has been invited a number of times to the National High School Drill Competition in Daytona Beach, Florida, as well as the Army Nationals JROTC Drill Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.  Murphy consistently achieves wins in Scholars' Bowl, Drill Team and Physical Training competition throughout Mobile County and at regional drill meets across the southeast.
